A BRief HISTORY LESSON
-1967- The first known outbreak of the virus occurred in a lab in Marburg, Germany. The people were working on polio vaccination research and it is believed they acquired the virus from African Green Monkeys found in Uganda. 31 people became infected and 7 were killed by the virus.
-1975- South Africa. A man traveling throughout Africa finds himself in Zimbabwe where he is believed to have acquired the virus. He then hitchhikes to South Africa, infecting two other people. These two people recover; however the hitchhiker dies of the Marburg Virus.
-1980- Kenya. Two people infected, one dies.
-1987- Kenya. One person becomes infected and dies.
-1980's- In a Russian biological weapons facility lab, accidents can be attributed to two deaths as the result of a Marburg infection.
-1998- Democratic Republic of Congo. A natural outbreak of the virus with 149 cases and 123 deaths.
-2004- Angola. 252 infected and 227 deaths.
-Present Day- Currently in Uganda we are seeing another outbreak of what appears to be the Marburg Virus.
